If there’s one treat that seems to be a universal favorite, I might have to guess it could be the doughnut hole! Small, flavorful, bite-size, and festive…I don’t think there’s many out there that can resist just one, or two, or three! The perfect size for a sweet appetizer and small enough to lessen the guilt factor if you’re watching your sugar! So easy to make look fantastic on a dessert buffet (4th of July is coming…) and they’re available at any doughnut shop or bakery! So go ahead and pile them on for a party or an everyday treat…

’cause who doesn’t like a doughnut hole?

One of the best things about early summer is the patriotic festivities that can stretch from Memorial Day through the Fourth of July!  If the first holiday sneaks by, you still have the opportunity to get you get your red, white, & blue on over the next several weeks!  I love the color combo for summer in general, so adding a few stars and stripes is an easy way to give your holiday gatherings an all-American look in a cinch!  This peek back at my Memorial Day celebration on the patio can still offer inspiration for July…and I intend on using some of the same supplies and recipes for a family gathering on the Fourth! (a great way to keep entertaining stress at a maximum low!)  I also want to share a favorite recipe that will be sure to please guests of all ages…so let’s have a little patriotic fun!

Lucky Morning!

In the days leading up to March 17 I love to serve up simple treats as a prelude to the big holiday celebration!  And since the name Hanrehan has an Irish ring…St. Patrick’s Day and it’s festivities have long been tradition in our home!  One of my favorite things to do is prepare an Irish inspired breakfast each March 17th to start the morning in St. Paddy’s Day style!  Even though it’s probably not the first “green” meal we’ve enjoyed during the month, it would be very unlucky for my kids if they didn’t awaken to something special on the actual holiday!  And since there’s a 5 out of 7 chance that this day will fall on a school morning…it’s a bonus to serve up something simple!  Today I’ll share what I’m preparing for this year’s holiday morning that promises to be easy, inexpensive, and can be made ahead–making your morning lucky too!  Whether you’re Irish or not…let your family wake this holiday to a shamrock inspired breakfast!

let your little leprechauns have a lucky morning!

Winter is a wonderful time to spend quality moments with family!  Long, cozy evenings are perfect for lingering at the dinner table…but as kids grow & get involved in endless activities those occurrences seem far and few–so when you get the chance to have a family meal you’d better grab it!  Such an opportunity came my way and it made me think a moment–when entertaining we all tend to add special touches to our meals to show appreciation for our guests…why not do these things once in a while just for us?  A good friend of mine would regularly use her table linens for evening meals…and while I was always in awe, I also thought she was a bit crazy for putting all that extra work into her schedule!  But now I’ve come to realize that, in her own way, she was so wonderfully creating a special atmosphere for her family to gather together and share a meal!  I know getting out all the linens and china isn’t for everyone…but once every so often adding your own special touches can make an ordinary family meal feel extra special!  So have a peek at some easy ways to highlight a dinner that simply celebrates togetherness!

Autumn often prompts us to spend some time in the kitchen…cooking up warm, yummy comfort foods and baking goodies for all the holidays ahead!  Today we would like to share a family favorite recipe for apple pie filling…a delightful treat that has been appreciated for generations!  After we take a trip to the apple orchard to load up on recipe requirements we spend an afternoon peeling and cooking up this gooey goodness, packaging it up in containers, and filling the freezer with more than a dozen packages of pie filling…a little time consuming, but totally worth the effort!  Throughout the year I have the ability to literally whip up a pie in no time by simply defrosting a container, plopping it into a crust, and baking!  Whether you want to stock up or just bake one…this recipe is as easy as it is tasty!  Perfect for the holidays-or any day for that matter!  Bake a pie…

just like Grandma’s!

I hate to speak for Sarah, but since we’ve been friends for so long I think it’s safe to say that neither of us fall into the category of gourmet chefs!  As busy moms go, I also think I can reveal that at times we could consider ourselves lucky to actually have dinner prepared for our families…we’ve all been there!  However, we’ve both been known from time to time to plate up some pretty tasty dishes and treats!  Inspired by family & friends–we’d like to begin to share some of our favorite recipes and food presentation tricks…most of which are super easy, wonderfully tasty…and not bad to look at!  Today we will share a favorite of the season…so perfect for an autumn treat…the apple bar!
