A fun utensil box can be a really helpful party decoration when you’re entertaining buffet style! It looks cute and serves such a functional purpose by containing all the paper products and silverware so your guests can easily serve themselves! And if you’re serving up some goodies outdoors, it can also keep the breezes from making a mess of the napkins or other lightweight tableware! Today I’m really excited to share with you the simplest DIY to make one yourself…and if you have an old pair of jeans lying around you’ve got half of what you need! I had access to plenty of raggedy old jeans when my oldest came home from college over the summer…a pair that was practically threadbare was just right for some recycling! Let’s get crafting so we can enjoy plenty of fall entertaining!
recycled denim…rustic utensil box!
i LOVE denim! you can often find me in a pair of jeans…so it fit my style to use a pair for this project!
here’s what you need:
a medium craft crate or box (appx. 12 x 8 and 6-7″ deep)
an old pair of jeans with back pockets
tacks
a hammer
scissors
a teen/adult size pair of jeans is the perfect fit to cover the front of a box this size. following the seams, cut one-half of the backside off…
make sure to leave enough fabric under the pocket to wrap around the underside of the box. cut the bottom edge at an angle so you don’t have to fold the denim when you wrap it…
here’s where you use the tacks…let’s start at the top
flip the box over and begin tacking the denim to the inside top-edge of the box. a hammer can help if the wood is hard but i was able to push most in by hand
try to be tidy as you’ll be able to see inside the box. rather than cut off the belt loop…i just attached it. i think it looks cute!
now flip the box upside down and tack the bottom edge so that the denim is tight. no one will see this side so make sure it’s secure, but don’t worry about appearances!
flip it over and put one tack on each side at the bottom…now you have a whimsical container for all your party supplies!
and the inside looks nice and neat too!
let’s put it to use!
i piled it full of paper products…an easy, serve-yourself station for a BBQ!
such a great way for family and friends to grab the goodies and head straight to the grill!
the pocket works perfectly for the silverware…
and the box can hold everything else!
i loved that this box has handles on the side so it’s easy to transport wherever it’s needed!
and it’s just big enough to hold cups too…so you can add your beverage to the table and you’ve got everything you need!
so if you’re planning on any casual entertaining this late summer and fall…make it fun, make it easy and just make it!
diy utensil box…easy as one, two, three!
