Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Sorry, but while thinking of a title for this post I just couldn’t resist that phrase in the popular song from Disney’s Frozen!  (I hope you don’t have it in your head all day!)  Wintertime is the season that inspires us to create those whimsical characters standing guard in the snow laden yard.  And even though their bodies are made from the frozen stuff, they can somehow melt the hearts of those who gaze upon them!  Unfortunately, we haven’t had enough snow (around here anyway) to get bundled up and make a seasonal friend or two…maybe there’s still a chance, it’s only January after all!  And while we wait for the snowflakes to fall I’ll share another way to make a snowman…the edible kind!  Leave it to my mom’s creative & talented friend to inspire me once again when she shared a photo of a snowman who festively adorned her holiday table.  The great thing about snowmen…they don’t just represent Christmas but the ENTIRE chilly-weather season!  Even though Santa has retired until December comes again, the snowman is still in style!  So if you’re having guests over this winter and want to create a wonderfully whimsical addition to your appetizer table, take a peek at this version of a snowman…it might just be your new favorite way to create the happy fellow!

easy, edible snowman!

when i saw the photo of the cheese-inspired creation i thought i’d missed the opportunity to share this fabulous idea.  Christmas had ended and i was ready to move on to other winter projects and new holidays!  but wait–snowmen are welcome ALL winter long, right?  so luckily i had the opportunity last week to try out this whimsical appetizer to share with friends!  any recipe will do, and you can get creative with the embellishments…i just dug through the fridge for mine!

veggies & herbs

i had a recipe that was a mix of old and new–from my recipe box & online…

Southwest Cheese Ball

1  8oz block of cream cheese

1/2 C. shredded cheddar cheese

2T. chopped cilantro

1 clove garlic, minced

1/2t. cumin

1/2t. worcestershire sauce

2T. canned jalepeno peppers chopped (or more to taste)

6 slices crumbled bacon, optional

mix all ingredients (except bacon) until blended well.  shape into a ball and roll in the crumbled bacon.

you can make whatever cheese ball you desire…even a purchased one would do!  you may need to double a recipe in order to make the shape of a snowman AND  you can replace the outer coating with a fine shredded parmesan…

parmesan

i only made a head and body…but you could make 3 snowballs if you wish!

i cut two sprigs of rosemary for the arms…and though the original used that same herb for the scarf as well, my rosemary was too stiff to bend so i substituted dill…

dill & rosemary

a tiny piece of a carrot (of course) for the nose, a sliver of chive for the smile, and peppercorns for the eyes and buttons…

snowman cheeseball

so cute!  but i was feeling like he needed a hat…mushrooms?  i decided to make a beanie from a mushroom cap and a tiny piece of cauliflower…

he kind of looks like an old-fashioned golfer!

with a guy this cute, you don’t need much more!  some crackers and olives were just right to compliment this winter appetizer…but beware, it was almost hard to eat him ’cause he was so darn adorable!

however, we managed!  if you’re looking for a fun, easy, and unique addition to your winter buffet…
