Do you ever find yourself at the market or a roadside stand wishing you could pick up a bunch of fresh flowers but it’s just not the last stop on your errand list? I hate having to forgo blooming beauties just because I can’t get them home before they begin to wilt! On occasion I’ll bring a wide-mouth canning jar filled with water if I think there’s a possibility of finding flowers…but as nice as that is, it’s really not that convenient or easy to tote. But today I’d like to share a simple revelation…a trick from a florist that I had never seen before and a super easy way to get those flowers home without wilt! As I walked into the market the other day I was greeted by a huge floral display filled with a late summer favorite–sunflowers! I so wanted to grab a bunch but since my grocery list consisted of non-perishables, I’d planned to make several other stops on my way home–so flowers just weren’t possible…or were they? A couple quick questions to the helpful florists behind the counter and I was walking out with my canned goods…and my blooms! Let me share with you what I’ll be keeping in my car from now on…
a “fresh” flower kit!
one of my favorite local grocery stores is the Kroger Marketplace in Holland! even though it’s not exactly the closest grocer to my home…i find it’s totally worth making the trip once in a while! and if i’ve got other stops in the area on my list, i’ll definitely make a point to shop there! not only is it a beautiful store…but it has the best flower market for a grocery store by far! and now i have another reason to love it…the lovely gals behind the flower counter! so i decided to take my chances buying a bunch of sunflowers, knowing full well i wasn’t headed straight home. i asked one of the girls if i could have a piece of wet paper towel to wrap the ends of my bouquet in hopes it would keep them from wilting. she said to me, “i can do one better!”
out from the back she came with this triangular piece of spongy material–dipped it in water and wrapped ’em up! i’ve never seen these before! she then told me you have to ask but most Kroger floral departments stock these handy wraps. i don’t doubt other florists have them too…i guess they just don’t advertise them!
secured in the little plastic bag with simple rubber bands…this fabulous get-up got me home with unscathed flowers!
so after unwrapping my little beauties…i decided to keep all the materials she gave me, along with a bottle of water, in my car for the next time i’m at a farmer’s market or anywhere i can’t get my hands on these flower-saving supplies! now i’m always prepared for the unexpected acquiring of blooms!
so even though they muddled through several stops…they made it back beautifully!
thanks to the gals at the flower counter–and their helpful tip…
