Ginger Spiced Mint Juleps might be the highlight of your Derby Day celebration! Mint juleps are a tradition for race watchers and this cool sip is still minty & delicious, but with a fun twist! Speaking honestly, some cocktails blended with whiskey aren’t my most favored. But I do enjoy a julep and this spiced version is another I can get on board with! Served up cold boasting those wonderful spices with fresh mint…this cocktail is going to be on my menu for Derby watching AND summer entertaining! Whether you’re hosting a party, or watching casually with family, this fun drink won’t disappoint…even the traditional mint julep fan! I’m so excited to partner with Misunderstood Whiskey to share their unexpected whiskey flavors and recipes for any celebration! Let’s get ready for the Run for the Roses…it’s coming up on us fast!
spiced up mint juleps!
giggle living may have received payment and/or product. however i only endorse products i love and all opinions are my own.
an unexpected whiskey twist is always fun…
what you’ll need for the Misunderstood Mint Julep: (recipe courtesy of Misunderstood Whiskey)
2 oz Misunderstood Ginger Spiced Whiskey
3/4 oz honey syrup
5 fresh mint leaves (more sprigs for garnish)
Top with 4 dashes aromatic bitters (angostura suggested)
muddle mint leaves and honey syrup in shaker. add ice, whiskey and shake 10 second. strain and serve over chunked or crushed ice in a julep mug. top with bitters and garnish with mint sprig. makes one cocktail.
i recommend using a julep mug/tumbler. the metal keeps the drink extra cold…and they look festive too!
since we’ll be celebrating the “fastest two minutes in sports”, i HAD to include a nod to the runners with a glass horse bookend on the table!
decor tip:
other simple derby inspired decorations could include: a small bouquet of red roses, decorative napkins, a hat, a framed print, or if you have kids, look for a toy horse that might work!
back to the drinks…
i like using large sprigs of mint to garnish. they look pretty and smell wonderful…
it’s preferable to serve a julep over crushed ice. but if you don’t like the ice to dilute the drink so quickly (like me), use whatever size cube you have. it will still taste delicious!
i also love using a sipping straw. it helps navigate the ice and makes it easier to drink…
so the moral of the drink is: try a flavor twist, don’t feel obligated to follow the rules, and shake up some delicious fun!
ginger julep for the win!!
