Not too long ago we revamped my little guy’s bedroom and I thought it was time to give my older son’s space a facelift as well! As kids grow, it’s fun to let their rooms change as they do…not necessarily a complete redesign but a few revisions to let their space reflect their current style! My boys’ rooms have seen many different themes…from cowboys to dinosaurs to safari…and since neither one of them wanted to completely let go of their past favorites, over time their rooms became a total hodge-podge of collections! Not that there’s anything wrong with that but eventually it’s time for a room to grow up…and if kids are ready they’ll welcome the change! So even though this room had seen some change already–it was once again time to let this bedroom really reflect my son as he is today! With a fresh coat of paint, a new-to-him bedroom set, and some fabulous artwork (from the artist who resides in the room!) we transformed his space!
time for changes…
a soothing gray with blue undertones was his top choice of color…and it’s the perfect backdrop to the gallery wall of some of his artwork! a little painter’s tape did the job to hang his favorites and makes it easy to change them whenever he likes! below the artwork is a long dresser…part of a mid-century set and it’s the real deal! a donation from my parents, this bedroom set was part of their room for as long as i can remember when i was growing up! still in fabulous shape…i think it suits a young man’s bedroom perfectly!
the radio, found at the endless garage sale last year, is a reproduction so it can play FM stations!
i grew up around antiques and learned to appreciate vintage items…and my kids do too! you’ll see plenty of antique store treasures in this space! the library table belonged to my grandparents and the old typewriter from my parent’s basement was something that my kids used to play with when we would visit! now my son actually uses it for some nostalgic fun!
we kept the room fun & youthful by painting the chimney wall in chalkboard paint! a whimsical way to highlight the odd wall and give it some personality! i write messages on it frequently…this one waiting for him when he gets home from camp! the little tin filled with chalk makes it easy for him to jot down anything important…or for his brother to leave interesting surprises!
a message board and an old pepsi crate help him stay organized…
the second dresser in the bedroom set sits beneath some tin initials in the window. sometimes old homes don’t offer perfect wall space…i never worry about placing furniture in front of windows especially if i don’t have a choice! i love the way the light back-lights his treasures anyway!
simple hooks for some favorite hats…
a place for snoozing…
even though his room is naturally on the darker side, the deep color on the walls makes it a cozy place to rest! and since we were trying to re-use as much as we could, some mismatched shelves got a fresh coat in the same color to help them blend in! and the vintage headboard has hidden compartments behind its sliding doors for him to tuck away favorite things he doesn’t want his brother to find!
instead of hanging this industrial shelf–we used it as a place to hold books…and paint balls!
the trunk was a lucky find at a garage sale recently…perfect for additional storage and double-duty as a bedside table!
anyone who knows my son would probably say this room looks like him! collections of the things he loves, easy to keep organized (’cause it doesn’t always look how it’s portrayed today…he’s at camp remember!) and full of his personality…
a room that’s almost grown up!
