DIY decorations are so much fun to create at any time of the year…but there’s something about Halloween that makes them extra fun! I think that this holiday is so whimsical and lighthearted that even a novice DIY-er (like myself) can let their creativity shine with easy projects that have plenty of wiggle-room where perfection is concerned! Recently my husband and I joined a supper club and I’m dying to host a small soiree this month…so holiday touches will be mandatory for my table! Let me share some of the decorations I’ll be using…and I’ll show you how to make them too!
set a halloween table in diy style!
this simple set-up is filled with colorful decorations that are hauntingly sweet…
decoupage is a diy decoration that’s as easy as it is festive! you can pretty-up a craft pumpkin, place it on a pedestal and you’ve got a perfect centerpiece that will serve as a decoration later!
let’s decoupage!
what you’ll need:
1 craft paper pumpkin
spray paint
decorative paper or material
scissors
mod podge glue
craft paint brush
wax or craft paper
paint your craft pumpkin whatever color the background is on the paper or material you choose…
i found this colorful dish towel at my local grocer and loved the pattern! if you choose fabric, make sure it’s lightweight!
roughly cut out the shapes from the material. painting the pumpkin the same color as the background will allow for the edges to seamlessly blend in…
a sheet of wax paper will protect your table…now get messy and spread a generous amount of craft glue on the pumpkin…
working in sections, place pieces of fabric on the pumpkin and heavily coat with more glue…
be sure to press the edges down and keep working until the pumpkin is covered…as much or as little as you like!
let it dry completely but check mid-way to see if any loose edges need to be pressed down before the glue sets!
spooky diy “vases”
i love to add extra details to a place setting…and these craft skulls were a cinch to turn into “vases”! i’ll add tags with my guest’s names to make whimsical place cards the night of my party!
here’s what you need:
styrofoam ornaments or craft skulls
tiny bottles or vases
sharp knife
i found these inexpensive ornaments and miniature bottles in the craft store…
it’s easy to just pull off the hangers…
with a pencil, trace around the base of the little bottle positioned on the top of the head…
using a sharp knife, carefully cut out a hole in the styrofoam so the bottle will fit down inside…
gently push each bottle inside the skull until it is mostly hidden…
fill with water and fresh greens or blooms! a really cute and unexpected detail for the table!
set the table!
i love to shop my house whenever i’m planning to entertain. don’t forget to raid your cupboards because i’ll bet you’ll find goodies you’ve forgotten you have! mismatched dessert plates work fine for halloween…and don’t forget you can always add holiday paper plates when layering your dishes!
i also used extra faux flowers i had on hand as an easy embellishment for my centerpiece. i tucked them in the perforations, but you could bundle them and lay them at the base of the pumpkin too!
no tricks just treats..
that’s what you get when you let simple decorations and casual table settings allow you to do what’s most important…spend time with people you love!
celebrate in spooktacular style…
happy “DIY-ing”!
