Hearts for Breakfast!

Every now and again, I like to make a special breakfast for my boys…especially as holidays draw near!  It’s now February and Valentine’s day is especially fun for making treats…hearts can be found almost everywhere you look and that wonderful tool, the cookie cutter, can turn tons of different foods into that traditional holiday shape!  And even though the big day falls over a weekend, I can still serve up easy breakfasts to help start some school-day mornings off with smiles!  This year I wanted to come up with some fun ideas that would be healthier but still provide some festivity…something that we don’t often have before heading off to class!  So in preparation of the upcoming treats, I HAD to test some out to make sure they were acceptable!  I’d like to share a couple easy and tasty winners!   This is what I’ll be dishing out this Valentine holiday…some morning fun…healthy bites…and holiday joy!

serve up some happy hearts…

on school mornings what i serve to the boys has to be easy AND quick…so when i found these ADORABLE waffles at Ikea i knew they’d be perfect for a holiday breakfast!

my boys love waffles…and the frozen kind are perfectly acceptable around here!  and these are so cute…

who wouldn’t love to wake up to this morning treat…Valentine’s Day or not!

i decided to skip on the syrup this time and top them with a dollop of cream and fresh fruit.  the waffles are pretty small so be prepared to serve up some seconds…or thirds…

without the stickiness of syrup, they can be picked right up off the plate…making them great for on-the-go!  keep popping them in the toaster as they get gobbled up!

another healthy grab-and-go…

when i see packaged food in the store that i know my family will love AND i can make something fun with it–i pounce!  while looking for protein and breakfast-type bars to put in lunches, i found heart shaped, whole grain breakfast biscuits!  Pepperidge Farms makes a variety of these little darlings…and oh boy, how easy it is to make them look fun!

since they’re soft they come in small, individual trays but i still had to “tweak” a couple by gently pressing them to make their shape more defined…but most were perfect!  topped with some strawberry hearts…they’re now ready to please!

you could simply serve them with a bowl of fresh fruit…but making the heart berry is relatively easy and they can be stored in an airtight container if you want to make them a little ahead.  just layer them in paper towel to collect the moisture.   find the biggest berries in the box…

remove the top and cut about a 1/4 inch slice…you can almost see a heart shape

with a paring knife carefully cut out your shape…eating all mishaps & scraps of course!

the back of the berry will be fatter at the top than at the point–you may need to shave it so it will lay flat…
