Second Tier

There’s something about pedestals that make everything look better!  You could put just about ANYTHING on one and have it look like a million bucks…or at least a hundred anyway!  A few years ago it was hard to find them in stores at affordable prices…but today you can find pedestals and tiered servers just about anywhere!  They can be plentiful in an array of shops, offered in multiple styles & colors, and often times for very little green!  And if you feel inclined, you can also easily make them yourself!  Today I’d like to share how simple and inexpensive it is to create a tiered server for any occasion.  I use my pedestals and servers all the time and not just for entertaining…even afternoon snacks for a bunch of hungry kids can somehow look fit for a party just by piling them up on a second tier!

two-tier server–DIY style!

a few weeks ago i featured instructions on how to create a serving tier made from simple flower pots & trays.  a cute project and something that’s especially fun to use outside for summer BBQs and s’mores around the fire!  so the same idea applies to any kind of serving piece you make…all you need is heavy-duty glue and literally anything you could stack together to create layers to serve your goodies! when you make it yourself you can create a piece that’s the perfect style just for you!

when i purchased the pots & trays for my patio piece, i also spied some simple and more contemporary dishes that i thought would work perfectly to create a server that would match multiple styles!  and the pedestal to hold the second tier?  a pepper shaker!  a reminder that anything with a flat surface will work to hold the layers of your server together!  other examples could be candle sticks, a vase or decorative bottle, even certain figurines might make a one-of-a-kind pedestal!  and you can use any plates or platters…plastic, glass, wood–vintage or new!  just remember if it isn’t a sealed surface to always use parchment or paper liners to hold the food!

i chose these plates for a minimalist, modern look that i could use all the time AND they don’t require extra prep before serving food from them.  depending on where you purchase your plates and pedestal, you could spend as little as $3 for two layers!  some squirts of heavy duty glue and 24 hours dry time is all that’s needed!

glue ’em, stack ’em, and let ’em dry!

and that’s it!  so easy!  now for the fun part…some “extra special” afternoon nibbles!  these inexpensive snacks from the grocery store look almost spectacular!
