All summer long and as far into the fall and winter as Mother Nature allows, when the sun begins to set we start flames blazing in our fire pit! I just love a good fire…as much indoors during the winter months as outdoors on a crisp autumn night! And even in the dog days of summer, only the most humid evenings can keep us from firing up that big cast iron bowl! The smell of the wood smoke is just heavenly to me any time of year, and the only thing that can make that aroma even better? If it’s tainted with the scent of toasted marshmallows slowly melting the chocolate in a s’more! What is it about a s’more that’s just so darn good? I really don’t know anyone who doesn’t like them AND now there’s so many variations of the gooey treat I don’t think you could ever get bored eating them! As summertime winds down it only means that the cooler season will allow plenty more fires and roasty treats on the horizon! But what if you have a hankerin for a s’more on a rainy day? Well, I have the answer to that…make ’em indoors! And even better…try a smothered s’more for a new twist on that traditional treat! Best thing about this altered version, it’s a fun kitchen project for the whole family! Remember, the family that makes s’mores together will definitely be happy…for the moment at least! All joking aside, it really can turn a dreary day or situation into something sweet! So check out how easy, fun, and tasty it is to make this popular snack!
more chocolate on my s’more please!
inspired by something i saw some time ago, the chocolate covered s’more was something that i was excited to try! how could it be bad? a s’more completely smothered in chocolate…sounds like a chocolate lover’s dream to me! and since we frequently make the traditional version outside, i had everything i needed (including the toppings) in my pantry…
all you need is a package of graham crackers or any cookie of your choice, marshmallows, chocolate spread, chocolate chips, and any kind of optional toppings you desire! i used round shortbread cookies for a slightly smaller version than a graham cracker would make. i topped them with a generous dollop of truffle (or chocolate hazelnut) spread…
once all the cookies are coated, set them aside and fire up the stove top! a great way to toast up the marshmallows just like being in the great outdoors…kind of!
place the toasted mallow on the other cookie half of the s’more…
and squish ’em together! you might have to work them a little so that they’re not lopsided but if you get marshmallow or chocolate spread on the cookie don’t worry, it will soon be hidden under all the chocolate!
melt the chocolate chips in a microwavable dish about 30 seconds at a time. stirring between heatings until the chocolate it totally melted and creamy…
once the chocolate is cool enough to handle, drop the s’mores in and cover completely. i used a spoon to smear the chocolate up the sides before flipping it over. you WILL end up with chocolaty fingers…but all the better for licking when the project is done. (and kids will definitely like the sticky finger part!)
place the coated s’mores on a silicone sheet, parchment, or wax paper and if you like, top them with sprinkles, candies, nuts, or whatever you can think of! we used sprinkles…
and crushed waffle cone crumbs for some extra crunch!
the hard part now is to leave them alone until the chocolate sets up…which takes a while since there’s so much smothered on! but it’s totally worth the wait!
a dismal day didn’t stay dismal for long!
enjoy a smothered s’more…soon!
