I love succulents! They’re easy to grow and require much less attention than many plants–which makes them very popular with me! This year I decided to fill my fairy gardens with multiple varieties of them…and lucky for me, my mother came to visit with two pre-planted pots in hand–packed to the brim with these little lovelies! She thought I could take out what I wanted for my fairy/gnome containers and plant the rest with my perennials. After finishing my mini gardens, I decided to highlight the remaining plants in the urns on my sidewalk leading to the house! I forgot how wonderful these little plants are…multiple shades and shapes of foliage looking every bit as beautiful as the colorful blooms of traditional flowers! During the dog days of summer, these plants will handle the heat and look great…even when I forget to water! So have a peek at these sweet succulents…a summer favorite!
let your planters try on some new foliage…
my miniature gnome garden is so fun that i now have two! maybe it’s because i never outgrew the doll house phase of my life! what a fun way to combine the sweetness of miniatures with plants…and these little succulents look especially cute with the gnomes this year!
…even though the hens & chicks have shoots that resemble worms!
another bonus…these adorable plants are hard to kill! i have chipmunks that bury things in this pot and often uproot the plantings…with succulents you just tuck them back in the dirt and it’s like nothing ever happened!
my second gnome garden sits inside an old metal container along a garden path…
the birds have pulled out almost all of the fibers from the lining at the bottom of the container to build their nests…they’ve helped themselves to the moss topping the little house too! i guess it’s nice that everyone seems to be enjoying it!
when i finished planting the mini gardens, there were plenty of succulents left over…so for a change, they ended up in my urns that i usually fill with seasonal greens and blossoms. i have to say i love the change from traditional blooming flowers…these plants will handle the small pots (that don’t hold much moisture) much better than sensitive blooms that wilt in the heat!
loving the multiple colors!
…and don’t forget they flourish in the ground too!
a great way to stretch your garden budget…when fall shows up, pull the greens from the pots and plant them along the borders of your perennial garden or bring them indoors! if you want to grow something that’s as easy as it is beautiful…
