It’s Paczki Time!

It really snuck up on us this year…it’s paczki time!  I can’t believe that Fat Tuesday is tomorrow and with it comes Paczki Day…a historically traditional day that serves up these goodies with the intent to use up all the fats & sugars in the home before Lent!  Each year the delicious, doughnut-like pillows stuffed with gooey fillings are a much anticipated treat in our home!  Pronounced “ponch kee”…these sugar-coated goodies are available in many bakeries & grocers in areas with Polish communities.  I’ve noticed recently that many bakeries offer shipping so just about anyone can partake in these well-worth-indulging-on pastries!  Unfortunately, this season  seemed to appear out of no where–and since Fat Tuesday is the last day you’ll see these little guys around, it’s sadly too late to place any orders. (take note for next year!)  But if you’re fortunate enough to live where paczkis are popular…don’t hesitate to treat yourself!  Time is running out–don’t miss your opportunity to indulge…whether this is a familiar tradition, or a newly adopted one–

get your paczkis before they’re gone!

Fat Tuesday Fun!

It’s almost Mardi Gras!  A time for celebrations & eating yummy, traditional treats–like king cakes and paczkis!  Two of my family’s favorite treats and new traditions!  Just in case you aren’t familiar with either–we’re going to focus on both today since there’s still time to indulge if you wish!  I had never heard of a paczki (pronounced like “poonch key”) until we moved to Toledo–but they’re a mouth-watering pastry stuffed with fruit or cream fillings much like a doughnut.  These pastries are not affiliated with Mardi Gras celebrations but are a Polish tradition of using up sugars and fats before Lent begins and are offered for a limited time prior to Fat Tuesday.  Knowing we can get them only once a year makes them a much anticipated treat!  So if you live in the Midwest, popular with Polish communities, get to your local bakery asap–you might be able to get in on the tasty fun before these treats are gone ’till next year!
